PROGRAM NOTE:
Kharis (pronounced ‘hah-ris’) means grace in Greek. The Kharites, or Graces, are the Three Goddesses of grace, beauty, joy, adornment, festivity, song and dance. This Triple Deity oversees activities of happiness and entertainment, including sleep and rest.

In this short piece I wanted to capture a feeling of a liveliness by (mostly) increasing musical activity throughout. Also, where it sounded best, I tried to musically represent the number three: materials are often grouped in threes or repeated three times.  It was fun to play this musical game; I hope the Kharites approve.

PRESS:

It was an electrifying and lively piece of music.
- Mark Pigott, Sydney Arts Guide

Kharis is a pleasing work, both interesting and fun to play. It is not especially difficult for intermediate/advanced players, but there are some more complex rhythms. It would appeal to those who appreciate contemporary styles, but who are not experienced in or fond of extended techniques.
- Beverly R. Lomer, American Recorder Magazine
