Elegy - solo piano and strings (2018-19)

Instrumentation: solo piano and strings (min. 2.2.2.2.1)
Duration: 12 minutes.
Commissioned by: Christopher Murray and the Camerata Obscura.
Premiere: postponed due to COVID-19.

SCORE AND PARTS: contact me.

PROGRAM NOTE: Elegy was written in memory of Angus Reekie. Angus was a student of mine when he passed away in 2016. He was 16 years of age.

Elegy is in 5 sections played without break; these sections largely form a ‘slow-fast-slow’ scheme. When writing the piece, it occured to me that the different sections perhaps represented the different emotions one may feel when dealing with loss. Composers can sometimes be coy when writing programme notes, in the hopes that the music will speak for itself. Please forgive me if I ask for this allowance here.
